Statistics Minor Program Requirement

Minor Description

Students interested in the minor must have the prior approval of the concentration advisor in the Statistics Department in order to develop a curriculum for the minor that is appropriate for their interests. Wharton students are not eligible for the Statistics minor.

Prerequisites (3 courses)

(1) Math 114: Calculus, Part II

(2) A introductory statistics sequence. Examples include:

  • STAT 101 and 102 Introductory Business Statistics
  • STAT 111 and 112 Introductory Statistics
  • STAT 430 Probability and STAT 431 Statistics **

Note: Students may take 2 semesters of economic statistics, such as ECON 103 and 220. These students do not need to take any other introductory courses but they can only apply one credit unit towards the fulfillment of the minor.

Students who take introductory statistics courses other than those listed above may have slightly different requirements for the minor and must be approved by the concentration advisor in the Statistics Department.

Core Course (1)

STAT 430 Introductory Probability

STAT 471 Intermediate Statistics

Pre-Approved Electives (3)** (additional courses may be counted towards the Minor only with Statistics Department approval)

STAT 430 Introductory Probability ***

STAT 432 Mathematical Statistics (all numbered STAT 512)

STAT 433 Stochastic Processes

STAT 434 Financial and Economic Time Series

STAT 471 Intermediate Statistics ***

STAT 472 Decision Making Under Uncertainty

STAT 475 Sample Survey Design

STAT 476 Applied Probability Models in Marketing

STAT 500 Applied Regressions and Analysis of Variance

STAT 501 Intro to Nonparametric Methods and Log-linear Models

STAT 530 Advanced Probability Theory

STAT 531 Advanced Stochastic Processes

STAT 540 Statistical Methods and Computation

STAT 541 Statistical Methods

STAT 711 Forecasting Methods in Management

*ECON 222 Advanced Econometric Techniques and Applications

*MATH 360 Advanced Calculus

*MATH 361 Advanced Calculus

*MATH 412 Advanced Linear Algebra

*OPIM 930 Stochastic Models

*Only one non-Statistics course may be used among the three electives of the minor.

**Since Stat 430 is also a core course, students who complete STAT 430-431 as an introductory sequence must complete 4 additional electives for the minor.

*** Students who take 430 to fulfill the core requirement make take 471 as an elective and vice versa.

Notes:

  • Courses numbered 43X are theory based, mathematics courses.
  • Courses numbered 47X are statistics courses of a more applied, computational nature.
  • Courses numbered 5XX are graduate level classes often taken by talented undergraduates.
  • Course numbered 7XX are MBA level classes that allow undergraduates to enroll.

Examples

A Math Major might take Math 114, Stat 430, Stat 431, Stat 432, 433, 471 and Math 412.

An Econ major may take Math 114, Econ 103-220, Stat 430, Stat 434, Stat 471, Econ 222, and Stat 476.

Alternatively, an Econ Major may take Math 114, Stat 430-431, Econ 222, Stat 433 and Stat 434.

A psychology major might take Math 114, Stat 111, Stat 112, Stat 471, Stat 500, Stat 501 Stat 475 .

There are as many reasons for choosing a graduate program as there are students, but four important factors seem to have influenced almost all of the students who have chosen the University of Pennsylvania for their graduate study in statistics.
