Statistical Advice for Doctoral Students
WHAT IS THE
STATISTICAL ADVISING SERVICE?
During the Spring Semester 2003, the senior
doctoral students in the Department of Statistics will be offering a
Statistical Advising Service to doctoral students in other departments. They will provide advice on statistical
aspects of empirical studies, including study design, methods of analysis, the
use and interpretation of statistical computing packages.
The Service that is offered will
consist of one or a few meetings, each a half hour to an hour in length, with a
senior doctoral student in the Statistics Department. The students will provide the service under the supervision of a
faculty member, Paul Rosenbaum, as part of their participation in a course,
“Statistics 950: Statistical
Practice”. The students involved in the
service have completed most of their course work in statistics, so they are
prepared to offer useful advice. The service is provided without charge.
WHO MAY USE THE
SERVICE?
The Service is available to doctoral
students at the University of Pennsylvania for their research activities, for
instance, the dissertation. The Service
may not be used for course work. If you have doubts about whether it is
appropriate to use the service for a particular project, ask your dissertation
advisor or the graduate advisor in your department.
HOW DO I USE THE
SERVICE?
Fill out the form on the reverse side
and return it via campus mail to the faculty advisor, Paul Rosenbaum,
Department of Statistics, Wharton School, 473 Huntsman Hall, 6340, or provide
all of the information requested in the form via e-mail to rosenbaum@stat.wharton.upenn.edu. The form is intended to ensure that your
request is given to the appropriate student, and to give that student an idea
of the advice you are seeking.
IS THE SERVICE
LIMITED IN ANY WAY?
Since the Service is offered through a
course, it is limited in several ways.
It will be available during the Spring Semester. Advice only will be provided. Should demand exceed supply, it may be
necessary to limit availability of the Service. The Service provides advice, hopefully good and useful advice,
but it does not assume responsibilities for your research project.
