You and your project team will take a “deep dive” into a large sports dataset using the tools you have learned during the R course. On the last day of the program, you and your team will make a short presentation to the rest of the camp.

While you and your team have a lot of freedom to analyze a datset of your choosing, we’ve put together a few possible projects to get your thinking.

• Revisiting the Pythagorean Expectation Formula: Try to improve on the original Pythagorean expectation formula for the four major American sports.

• A Pythagorean Points Formula: Try to devise a formula to predict the number of points scored by an English soccer team as a function of the number of goals for and goals again. Note: you can do this project using data from the NHL too!

• Distance-to-Nearest-Defender: How does the distance to the nearest defender affect the chances of a basketball player making a shot?
